My Top 5 Natural Hair Care Products: Toyin Awesu (Founder, TwentySix85.com)

So when Losbeauty approached me about writing a post on my top 5 natural hair care products i.e products  I absolutely cannot do without, it was a no-brainer for me. First of all, I’m a ‘Naturalista and have been one for more than a decade, crazy right? And throughout my naturalista journey, I have done just about everything to my hair, the good, the bad and even the ugly, coloring’s gone wrong, lopsided cuts, braids from hell, blowouts with heat damage… you call it, I’ve done it.

Now, you may be thinking that these horrible experiences are too terrible for my gentle soul..ermm..hair… to bear, but I can assure you that I learned the most important lesson, (which actually spurred me into founding my online hair care platform)that all women, natural or relaxed must strive for healthy hair because in the end, this is what truly matters especially when it comes to hair retention, volume & shine and curl definition. The honest truth is that many people equate having natural hair to having strong healthy hair, which can be very misleading, because natural hair, when not properly cared for is similar to relaxer damaged hair. On the other hand, with a amazing products coupled with a proper hair care regimen will leave natural or relaxed in tip-top condition.

Through the journey, I’ve also had my fair share of “Product Junkie moments”, but without them, it would have been very hard for me to nail down my top 5 natural hair care products.

Go-to Hair Cleanser

Giovanni Triple Threat Shampoo
Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Threat Shampoo. Price: N3,000/8.5 fl oz

For fine strands such as my own anything infused with tea tree is an added benefit. I like the Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Threat Shampoo because it gets my hair squeaky clean without leaving a dry feeling. It’s sulfate free but still foams so you still get that sudsy effect.  Oh did I mention, the ‘tingling’ feeling from the tea tree extracts.

Go-to Conditioner- This is a tie

ytc_nourishing_conditioner-1
Yes to Carrots Nourishing Conditioner. Price: N4,900/16.9 fl oz

For my hair it does just that, nourish. It gives me enough slip without making my hair feel like it’s ‘coated’ in silicones. I also enjoy the fact that it is made with beta-carotene and is Paraben and SLS free. It’s indeed a healthier option for the hair.

tresemme-B00AO4E9MC-1-l
TRESemme Keratin Smooth Conditioner. Price: N3,500/ 25 fl oz

Like most naturals, we have different products for different things. The TRESemme Keratin Smooth Conditioner provides me with my monthly dosage of keratin protein (not too much) and reduces the frizz, giving me a much more defined curl pattern after use. I generally use this conditioner if I have any intention of applying heat to my hair.

Go-to Leave-in Conditioner

mixed chicks leave in
Mixed Chicks Leave in Conditioner. Price: N2,500/ 10 fl oz

I discovered Mixed Chicks products a few years ago. Originally, I had not interest in the product because I thought, like most it was solely for ‘mixed race’ women. However, that is not the case. But I will say, the product line is best suited for textures between 3c-4a/b. 4c naturals you won’t be too pleased with your results. This leave in conditioner has become my staple because I liked the way it kept my hair moisturized in various climates (cold, warm, hot, tried and true) and minimized frizz, especially in this Lagos sun.

Go-to Hair Oil Blend

Natural+Hair+Growth+Oil
Nappily Nigerian Uber Moist Growth Oil. Price: N4,200

In the past I have been a stickler for just a few types of oils, specifically black castor oil, almond, and amla oil. When I came across the Uber Moist Growth Oil, I immediately knew I had to try it out. While this product has not been a staple for so long, it immediately became a favorite because it is a pure blend of coconut oil, castor oil, extracts of Amla, Bhringjag, Neem, Henna, Orange peel, grape seed oil, vitamin E, vitamin C and an essential oil blend. In addition this, it smells pretty darn good too.

Go-to Treatment/Deep Conditioner

Organix argan treatment
Organix Moroccan Intense Argan Treatment. Price: N3,800/ 8 fl oz

Hair treatments are a must when developing a healthy hair care regimen. The frequency in which you will need to do this is based on your hair texture.  For me, I have consistently used Organix Moroccan Intense Argan Treatment as my deep conditioner and treatment. The product especially comes in handy when I henna my hair or get a protein treatment, which often leaves the strands a bit crunchy. Once I have used Oragnix Moroccan Intense Argan Treatment, the moisture in my hair is restored. This rare formula has a centuries-old history of providing natural vitamin E and antioxidants while renewing your hair’s cell structure, sealing in shine, and creating lush softness. And trust me, it does just that!
