About Organic Skincare

When it comes to skincare, the best route to take in my opinion is the Organic one, as cliché as I know it may sound. Having a great organic skincare routine is the safest way to problem free, evenly toned and healthy skin which everyone dreams about. When trying to build a solid organic skincare routine, it is not only crucial to make sure that you use products comprise mainly (97% minimum) of natural ingredients but you must also make sure that your lifestyle stays in-line and supports your routine through a healthy diet. These two vital steps must co-exist and is the only sure way to have a truly effective organic skincare routine.

How then do you know what natural ingredients apply topically to skin? There are quite a number of such as naturally produced skincare products as well as naturally occurring minimally processed products including natural oils such as Coconut, Argan, Jojoba and Olive Oils, Shea Butter; Herbs and Spices such as Rosemary, Thyme, Turmeric, Ginger, Garlic, Coconut Water, Honey, Fresh Milk & Yoghurt, Animal produce such as Fish oils, Caviar etc. Yes, I know this list seems a little grocery-like, however, one fundamental rule about organic skincare makes  it much more easy to understand.

If you cannot ingest it, don’t apply it.

As simple as this rule may sound, it is believed to be the most effective way to stay youthful and prevent the passage of time from getting etched permanently on your skin.

Moving on to eating according to organic skincare, it is vital to note that this method of skincare is not the same as vegan skincare, though they share some similar principles. Both organic and vegan skincare place great importance on consumption and topical application of healthy plant based products, however, organic skincare differs from vegan skincare in the consumption animal produce, and topical application of  animal derived skincare products.

For organic skincare, the consumption of healthy animal produce is allowed because it is believed that certain easily absorbed nutrient variations of Omega 3, Omega 6, Selenium, Vitamins B12, C, D, E, K and K2 etc needed by man is specifically derived from animals. Such nutrients are needed for optimal health due to their ability to promote youthful looking skin as well as their anti-aging properties. Some examples of animal produce which greatly improve and maintain skin appearance include organic pasture grown animal livers especially beef liver, eggs, fresh milk and yogurt, caviar, oily fish like sardines, shell fish, butter, poultry etc.

The healthiest plant based produce, packed full of antioxidants and endorsed by both organic and vegan skincare propagators include antioxidant rich foods such as carrots (boiled), red Tomatoes, most Berries, Citrus, Nuts etc. (must be organically grown). Consumption of these types of plant-based foods prevent cell deterioration due to oxidation, inhibit free radicals and help slow down the aging process. In both skincare schools of thought, the advocation to cut back on refined sugars is emphasized.

In order to fully tie your organic skincare routine together, it is important to follow some simple basic skincare steps. These include daily steps such as cleansing, moisturizing, wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated, bi-weekly or tri-weekly steps such as exfoliating and a monthly step of getting a professional facial. The latter which was largely missing from my skincare routine till recently when I got gifted a voucher for a deep cleansing facial at the B’natural Med Spa here in Lagos, Nigeria, more on that later.

In the meantime, here is a YouTube video from one of my favorite beauty vloggers, SunkissAlba, documenting her day/night time organic skincare routine.
